Maryland QB enters NCAA portal as graduate transfer

Maryland’s quarterback room is reportedly shrinking.
According to a report from 247Sports, Max Bortenschlager has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal. The backup and former starting quarterback will be a graduate transfer, meaning he’d be immediately eligible to participate in the 2020 season. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
Bortenschlager started in nine career games for the Terrapins, eight of those coming in 2017. He started out low on the depth chart, but rose quickly with injuries to Kasim Hill and Tyrrell Pigrome coming early in the year. Bortenschlager threw for 1,313 yards and 10 touchdowns with five interceptions that season, adding two rushing scores, as well.
In 2018, Bortenschlager appeared in three games on special teams before suffering an injury. He did not play in the 2019 season.
Last season, the Terrapins used four quarterbacks — Josh Jackson, Pigrome, Lance LeGendre and Tyler DeSue. Even with Pigrome out of the picture, it’s unlikely Bortenschlager would climb up the depth chart and see significant snaps in 2020.
Entering the NCAA transfer portal does not force a player to transfer, but it does allow him the opportunity to contact other schools and coaches to hear what his options would be.
Maryland finished the 2019 season with a 3-9 record.
