Former Maryland running back Anthony McFarland is the first B1G player selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s the conference’s third running taken overall.
McFarland was taken with the 124th pick this year and will be starting his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was one of two Maryland running backs to declare for the draft this year, along with teammate Javon Leake.
McFarland was one of the few bright spots for Maryland’s football program the last two seasons. He was arguably one of the most electrifying players in the B1G, but with the Terrapins struggling to win games, he never quite got the recognition he deserved. Now, he’ll have the opportunity to showcase his talent to the world at the next level.
As a freshman in 2018, McFarland racked up 1,034 rushing yards to lead the Terps on the ground. He also scored four touchdowns that season, but is most remembered for an explosive outing against Ohio State, rushing for 298 yards and two scores on 21 carries against the Buckeyes.
Last season, McFarland saw a dip in his production, rushing for 614 yards and eight touchdowns on 114 touches. He also had 126 receiving yards and a touchdown on 17 catches.
