Matt Rhule is stepping into a role that features one of the proudest fanbases in college football.
And while Nebraska hasn’t had a winning season since 2016, the new head coach of the Huskers thinks 2023 will be a step in the right direction.
Rhule discussed the expectations for Nebraska this season during an recent appearance on The Herd, when he told Colin Cowherd that Nebraska can be viable this season.

Rhule returns to the college ranks after a 2-year stint as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. With a college record of 47-43 across stops at Temple and Baylor, Rhule has a strong track record of rebuilding.
However, Rhule is still preaching patience from his team as he develops his system.
“I told our guys the other day: ‘It usually takes me 3 years’. I wish I could do it faster,” Rhule said. “I’m just not smart enough to be able to do it 1 year.”
Yet, with a veteran-laded squad anchored on offense by transfer quarterback Jeff Sims, Rhule isn’t going to underestimate Nebraska’s ability to be a tough draw for opponents.
“There’s a bunch of guys on this roster that are seniors. So is it Coach Rhule’s Year 1 or is it you guys’ Year 4?” Rhule said. “If the juniors and seniors make it their team, we’ll be a team that people have to deal with.”
The Rhule Era at Nebraska kicks off with a road contest at Minnesota on Aug. 31.
