Matt Rhule’s Nebraska team marched into Bloomington on Saturday with a solid 5-1 record. Yes, the Cornhuskers were an underdog against a 16th-ranked Indiana team that was undefeated and brimming with confidence.
But nobody except maybe the most optimistic Indiana fan who’s suddenly been spoiled by success could’ve envisioned the 56-7 thrashing that the now 7-0 Hoosiers administered to Nebraska in continuing their best start in 57 years.
The Cornhuskers barely got above 300 yards of total offense and committed a staggering 5 turnovers in the Week 8 shellacking that dropped their Big Ten record to 2-2. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule was disappointed, obviously, but even more he was shocked at what transpired on Saturday and blamed himself first.
“I thought they had our number today, and that’s the part that really infuriates me as the head coach,” Rhule said in the postgame press conference. “People want to point at this person, that person — it should be pointed right at me. I usually can see things coming. I can tell you right now, I did not see this coming.”

Nebraska’s defense was shredded, giving up 495 total yards to the upstart Hoosiers.
“Credit to them. I don’t want to take anything away from them,” Rhule said. “They’re an excellent football team. But, yeah, I did not see this coming.”
Some more bad news for Rhule and his team? Next comes a trip to Columbus to face an angry Ohio State team that’s fresh off a loss at Oregon.
