Matt Rhule made something very clear about Nebraska’s red zone mentality heading into the 2023 season.

“We want to score touchdowns, not field goals,” Rhule said, via the Omaha World-Herald Tuesday. “That’s our whole mindset. And I like the way we’re proceeding.”

The Huskers had a strong 2022 season inside the red zone, scoring on 87% of their trips within the 20-yard line. 67% of those scores were for touchdowns. Rhule, who is making his return to college coaching after a stint in the NFL, is hoping for that trend to stay and even increase heading into his Year 1 in Lincoln.

He specifically pointed out QB Jeff Sims’ role in keeping that number efficient:

“A quarterback has to be really cognizant down there of kind of having a sniper’s mentality of touchdown/check down,” Rhule said “Not scrambling around and taking sacks.”

The Huskers kick off the 2023 season on Thursday, Aug 31 against Minnesota.
