There’s a new tradition at Nebraska under head coach Matt Rhule when it comes to jersey numbers, something he recently explained ahead of the 2023 college football season.

Under Rhule, the toughest players on the team will don a single-digit jersey number. It’s nothing new as far as a way of doing things for Rhule himself, as he’s implemented the system at previous stops, including Temple and Baylor.

He explained it more for those who may not be familiar with it in his recent appearance on Huskers Radio9 Network.

“I just hope they recognize that the single digit means that we’re looking for who best represents what it means to be a Nebraska Cornhusker,” Rhule said. “Who best represents to be a man from this locker room. Who is relentless, who is disciplined, who plays violent football, who is a great person in the community.”

Rhule continued:

It will be interesting to watch who takes and holds onto these numbers during Rhule’s tenure in Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are set to open the season against Minnesota at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, August 31.
