Matt Rhule knows the first year of his tenure is sometimes a bumpy road. At least, that’s the way Rhule’s previous collegiate head coaching stops of gone at Temple and Baylor.
During his Monday press conference, Rhule said Nebraska is still in the process of learning how to win. That’s admittedly a painful process but he’s focused on not wasting a crisis if the team can learn from it.
“We’re learning how to win, it’s painful right now,” said Rhule. “I get it, but we’re never going to waste a crisis. We’re going to learn from it.”
Rhule went on to admit the results so far this season are kind of indicative of what happens when you hire him. But, while there is no quick fix with Rhule, he believes the rebuild will be one that lasts for the future.
“Again, this is kind of what you get when you hire me. It’s not going to be a quick fix, it’s not going to be overnight,” Rhule explained. “We believe it’s gonna be built to last, it’s going to be built on rock, so we take advantage of these painful, painful moments. Our goal is to say in 3 years we did our best coaching these weeks.”
It’s not always you get that type of honesty out of a head coach, but Rhule is not dancing around the subject. In his first-year games at Temple, Baylor and Nebraska, Rhule is now 3-23 overall. We’ll see if the team and rally and make things a bit better over the rest of the season.
