Matt Rhule on Jeff Sims’ 3 interceptions: ‘The great ones bounce back’

Matt Rhule and Jeff Sims made their long-awaited Nebraska debuts in Week 1. While the Huskers had a number of positives to consider, it did not stop the program from falling to Minnesota 13-10 in heartbreaking fashion.
Sims did a number of positive things in the loss, including a team-high 91 rushing yards for the dual-threat quarterback. Unfortunately, he threw 3 interceptions, including one in the red zone and another late in the fourth quarter with a shot to win the game.
At his Monday press conference, Rhule said Sims is not the first QB to have a game like that, but it’s all about how the player responds moving forward. He also said Sims’ performance was uncharacteristic of how the QB had been trending ahead of Week 1.
“When I left last night he was in there watching tape. He’s not the first QB that’s ever thrown 3 interceptions. The great ones bounce back from it even better,” said Rhule. “I think you find out about people when they go through a little adversity.
“Obviously, he had not been trending that way. Got in the game, made some plays that if he could take back he would but he can’t. We’ll just be there for him as he gets better this week.”
Sims will get his first chance to respond in Week 2 against Colorado. That game comes on the big stage for FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff and should feature an amped-up crowd for Deion Sanders’ home debut in Boulder.
