Matt Rhule on Monday praised former tight ends coach Bob Wager, who resigned last week following a DUI arrest.

Wager joined new coach Matt Rhule’s staff this year after 17 years as head coach at Arlington (Texas) Martin High School. Rhule said it was an unfortunate situation and Wager took responsibility for it.

“Not a lot of men would have handled it the way he did,” Rhule said. “I don’t judge people by their tough moments or worst moments. I always judge them by how they respond and I really appreciate him and am thankful for him. It was a short time, but he brought some recruits here, he brought some of his kids here. So I appreciate him and wish his family the best. He’s a great coach, I know he’ll do great things.”

According to Lincoln Police, Wager was cited near Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday at around 1:24 a.m for DUI, refusal of a preliminary breath test, refusal of a chemical test, possession of an open alcohol container and careless driving, KOLN reported.
