Matt Rhule is gearing up for his first spring session as head coach at Nebraska. For his first year with the Huskers, Rhule is also getting 2022 starting quarterback Casey Thompson in the fold for one more season.
Coming out of last season, Thompson was set to undergo shoulder surgery after battling an ailment throughout the year. On Monday, Rhule explained what he’s hoping to get out of Thompson this spring.
Rhule announced he’s hopeful Thompson will be able to throw during the spring session. However, he also noted Thompson will “be pretty limited.”
During the 2022 season, Thompson threw for over 2,400 yards with 22 total touchdowns despite missing time with an injury.
Nebraska’s outlook for QB1
While some head coaches come into a program with the intent to switch things up, Thompson should still be viewed as the starting QB for the Huskers heading into the spring and summer. His experience last season should only aid that outlook.
However, it should be noted that Nebraska added former Georgia Tech starter Jeff Sims via the transfer portal this offseason. Sims is a dual-threat QB who had 41 total touchdowns and over 5,600 yards of offense during his time with the Yellow Jackets.
Thompson being limited in the spring could open a door for Sims to impress, but the final QB battle is unlikely to be determined until we get into the summer and fall training camp.
