Matthew Mayer offered a health update after his recent breakout performance against Texas.

Mayer, a graduate transfer from Baylor, has been impeded by a back injury that he suffered shortly after joining the team back in July. Speaking to the press on Friday, the forward stated that he is at “75% physically” after dealing with multiple different ailments in addition to the back injury.

Mayer, who played four seasons at Baylor, averaged 9.8 points and 5.0 rebounds across 33 starts in his senior year with the Bears. The guard was a much-anticipated addition to the Illini team, and was expected to make an immediate impact with his shooting skills.

Illinois recently knocked off No. 2 Texas thanks to the efforts of players like Mayer. Mayer had 21 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. The Fighting Illini beat the Longhorns 85-78 in overtime.

Stay tuned for more updates on Mayer before tipoff against Penn State. Penn State-Illinois starts at noon ET Saturday on BTN.
