Mel Tucker is a finalist for AFCA national coach of the year award

After a successful year with Michigan State, Mel Tucker is a finalist for the AFCA National Coach of the Year, according to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press.
The Spartans went 10-2 in Tucker’s second season at the helm. The 2021 season included a 3rd-place B1G East finish with a 37-33 win over Michigan and a bowl berth.
The AFCA National Coach of the Year Award has been around since 1935. The B1G won it last year with Indiana’s Tom Allen taking home the award after the Hoosiers had a 6-2 record.
If Tucker does win the award, it will be the 3rd time a Michigan State coach has won it. The award typically goes to the top college football coach in college football.
The winner will be announced on Jan. 9th, 2022.
