Mel Tucker collected his 4th road win against ranked teams in 4 years as Michigan State upset No. 16 Illinois on Saturday.
The Spartans were able to keep their bowl eligibility hopes alive on Saturday, while the win was enough to set Tucker apart as the coach with the most road wins against ranked teams in the FBS over that 4-year time span.

Saturday’s win was a big boost for the Spartans, who are 4-5 this season under Tucker. It’s a difficult reality for Spartan fans to face as Michigan State had an 11-2 record capped off with a Peach Bowl victory over Pitt last season. The Spartan season performance resulted in Tucker and Michigan state agreeing to a 10-year, $95 million contract extension.
Despite the struggles, Tucker showed his team can still pull off a big win with their backs against the wall. While the program needs further stabilization — especially after the ugly incident following the loss to Michigan — the win is a nice building block for Tucker’s crew moving forward.
Michigan State will return to East Lansing to face B1G foe Rutgers next Saturday.
