Memphis is actively pursuing someone to fill its defensive coordinator position after Mike MacIntyre left to become the head coach at FIU.

Ohio State’s secondary coach Matt Barnes is being considered for the DC job at Memphis per a report from 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello. Barnes also called plays on defense for the Buckeyes in September after Kerry Coombs was demoted.

Marcello put his report on Twitter Friday afternoon from his account.

Barnes has been with Ohio State since 2019 and helped coach the Buckeyes’ defense during their conference championship winning seasons in 2019 and 2020. In 2019, his secondary allowed the fewest yards passing per game with 156 per game. The Buckeyes’ also lead the nation in pass-efficiency defense with a rating of 97.50.

You can watch Barnes and Ohio State in what could be one of his last games on the sidelines for the Buckeyes on New Years’ Day against Utah.

No. 6 Ohio State (10-2) and No. 11 Utah (10-3) meet in the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN.
