Michael Mayer – and Notre Dame overall – is facing a tough task in Week 1, but that challenge is not denting Mayer’s confidence heading into Columbus.
To open the season, Ohio State and Notre Dame will face off in the Horseshoe for a marquee nonconference battle. The Buckeyes and Irish are top-5 programs on most preseason polls, so it will be an early must-see matchup in 2022.
Ohio State is traditionally hard to beat at home, especially under head coah Ryan Day. But regardless of the challenge, Mayer doesn’t see anything special about the stadium in Columbus.
According to Notre Dame beat reporter Tyler Horka, Mayer indicated he doesn’t believe the ‘Shoe is “any different than the other stadiums we’re going to be playing in.” Mayer also said he isn’t worried and the goal remains the same: “Just go play football.”
Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer on playing at Ohio State’s Horseshoe in Week 1: “I don’t think it’s any different than the other stadiums we’re going to be playing in this year. To me, it’s like, ‘home game, away game, just go play football.’ I’m not worried about it.”

Confidence is great, but Mayer can rest assured the crowd in Columbus will come out with a huge atmosphere for the bright lights in Week 1. We’ll see how that atmosphere and home-field advantage factor into the outcome.
