Michael Penix Jr. will be the starting quarterback at Washington, the program announced Tuesday. Penix beat out sophomore Dylan Morris and redshirt freshman Sam Huard to be the Huskies’ QB1.

After 4 seasons at Indiana, Penix transferred to Washington. He reunited with Kalen DeBoer. The former Indiana quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in 2019 is entering his first season as the Huskies’ head coach.

Penix, out of Tampa Bay Tech in Florida, joined the Hoosiers in 2018. During his time at Indiana, Penix played in 20 games. He redshirted after playing in 3 games in 2018. Season-ending injuries limited him to 6 games in 2019 and 5 in 2021. The 2020 season was shortened due to COVID-19.

As a passer, Penix was 342-of-576 in his career (59.4 completion percentage) with 29 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and 5 300-yard games over 4 seasons. All-time at Indiana, Penix shares No. 5 in 300-yard games, and ranks No. 6 in completion percentage and No. 10 in passing TDs. As a runner, he recorded 165 yards on 64 attempts with 6 scores.

With Penix’s redshirt and COVID-19 waiver, he is considered a fifth-year junior at Washington. The Huskies notably face a Big Ten foe, Michigan State, on Sept. 17 in Seattle.
