With NIL deals, the college football landscape has changed. Michigan AD Warde Manuel joined the ‘Conqu’ring Heroes’ podcast to discuss how Michigan is going to keep up with NIL collectives per Aaron McMann of Mlive.
Manuel wants to ensure that NIL collectives are going to be used the right way at Michigan. He went on to say that there are a couple of collectives in development for Michigan student athletes, but reinforced that they should be for educational purposes.
““It always to me has to be about education,” Manuel said on the podcast. “The collectives can help us, and they can help to provide additional support.”
The Wolverines’ AD also described how these collectives can be used the in the wrong way. He stated that he doesn’t want the collectives to solely be used just to give student-athletes at Michigan money just for being student-athletes.
“If collective means pooling money together and giving people money for just being a student-athlete at Michigan, I’m against it,” Manuel said. “If collective means providing opportunities and resources and pooling them together and providing them to student-athletes and assuring that they’re doing something for that benefit, there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I’m supportive of collectives that do things the right way.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Michigan and other universities go about this.
