Friday was a record-setting night for Michigan in the B1G Tournament.
The Wolverines cruised to a 74-53 win over Iowa in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament, becoming the first team to ever win nine straight games in the tournament’s history. Michigan took the title in 2017 and 2018, winning four games each year.
With the win, Michigan advances to play Minnesota with a trip to the championship game on Sunday on the line. No team has ever won the B1G Tournament in three consecutive years.
But Michigan’s nine-game tournament winning streak wasn’t the only record that was hit on Friday night. Point guard Zavier Simpson tied a tournament record with 11 assists in the win, coming just one shy of setting a new bar.
Simpson finished with a double-double, adding 10 points to go along with his assist total. He was also a perfect four-of-four rom the floor and two-of-two rom the foul line.
Four other Wolverines scored in double figures in the win, led by Ignas Brazdeikis, who scored 15 points. Isaiah Livers had 13 points off the bench and Jon Teske added 12. Jordan Poole chipped in with 11 points.
Michigan played about as well as it possibly could in the win, assisting on 24 of the 28 made field goals in the contest. The Wolverines also committed just seven turnovers and outrebounded the Hawkeyes by three in the win.
For the past two seasons, Michigan has played extremely well in the B1G and NCAA Tournaments. It looks like John Beilein has his team well prepared again this March.
