Michigan loses second 4-star prospect of Early Signing Period, this time to UCLA

Whereas most Big Ten programs were having a relatively drama-free Early Signing Period, Michigan is, well…not having a great day.

Quintin Somerville de-committed from Michigan on Wednesday and committed to UCLA. The four-star linebacker was the second prominent player to drop the Wolverines on Wednesday, the first day of the Early Signing Period.

The uncertainty around the Wolverines program, Somerville said, led to him flipping.

“Coach Shaun Nua has been the reason I committed to Michigan in the first place, his presence in my recruitment has been big and I consider him a family member now, just with how he treats me and my family,” Somerville said according to 247Sports. “He was the coach I know would help me get comfortable at Michigan and, with the staff future up in the air there, it was tough making the decision knowing that he might not be in Ann Arbor, that was one of the hardest things.”

Earlier on Wednesday, four-star linebacker Branden Jennings from Jacksonville, FL flipped to Maryland after originally committing to Michigan.

This is all part of the fallout of a down season in Ann Arbor. Michigan is 2-4 and has struggled on the field with some bad losses that saw them drop out of the AP Top 25 Poll early this season. Off the field, they’ve had to cancel their last two games of the season, a week ago at Ohio State and this weekend against Iowa, as COVID-19 has hit the program hard.

Somerville, a four-star defensive end out of Scottsdale, AZ, is the No. 219 player in the nation per 247Sports. He had committed to Michigan on June 20 of this past summer.
