Michigan started the 2021-22 basketball season off with a win, though Buffalo was far from a pushover Wednesday night.
The Bulls out of the MAC started out playing from behind early on and found themselves in a 15-point hole at halftime. It appeared Juwan Howard’s Wolverines might cruise to a lopsided win, but things turned in the second half.
Buffalo battled back in what turned into a chippy second half. The Bulls even cut the lead to 70-65 with 7 minutes left in the game but could not get any closer. In the end, it was Michigan pulling away for a comfortable but hard-fought 88-76 win.
Unsurprisingly, the star for Michigan was big man Hunter Dickinson. The preseason All-B1G and All-American nominee led the way with a team-high 27 points. It is the second-most points in a game for the sophomore. He rounded out the game with 6 rebounds and a block while shooting 11-for-17 from the field.
Three other Wolverines finished in double figures with star freshman Caleb Houstan chipping in 11 points. Houstan finished 4-for-7 from the field (2-for-4 from three-point range) with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.
Buffalo was led by Jeenathan Williams who posted a game-high 32 points.
After securing the first win of the season, Michigan will face Prairie View A&M on Saturday.
