Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker is adding a Michigan high school coaching legend to his staff for the upcoming season.

Mick McCabe of the Detroit Free Press reported on Friday that Michigan Staff has added Detroit Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher to the staff. He will serve as an analyst. The university has not yet confirmed the hiring.

Wilcher has been incredibly successful during his time at Cass Tech, posted a 190-70 record over 23 seasons. He has led his program to three state titles and one runner-up in over two decades.

A pretty strong list of talented players have played under Wilcher during his lengthy run at Cass Tech. He’s coached players like Jourdan Lewis, Delano Hill, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Michael Onwenu, William Campbell and Joe Barksdale. All have reached the NFL.

Michigan State reportedly makes the hire as summer workouts and fall camp approaches. The Spartans are coming off a 2-5 campaign in 2020, defeating in-state rival Michigan and No. 8 Northwestern.

Michigan State will open the season on Friday, Sept. 3 on the road against Northwestern.
