It took a little bit for Mel Tucker’s group to get into gear on Friday, but Michigan State got the victory. The team posted about some of the top performers from the 35-13 win over Western Michigan.
RB Jalen Berger, QB Payton Thorne, WR Keon Coleman, LB Jacoby Windmon, P Bryce Baringer, and LB Ben VanSumeran all had great stat lines in the season opener.
Berger and Windmon both had great debuts with their new team. Berger ran for 120 yards rushing with 1 touchdown, while Windmon recorded 4 sacks, 7 tackles, and 1 forced fumble. Thorne picked up from where he left off in 2021, with 233 yards passing with 4 touchdowns.
One of Thorne’s top targets was Keon Coleman, who finished with 84 yards receiving and 1 touchdown. Another LB who had a great game other than Windmon was VanSumeran. VanSumeran had 11 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Lastly, Baringer helped flip field position with an average of 50.5 yards per punt, and a 70 yard punt as his longest of the game.
Perhaps the Spartans will have some repeat performers following their next game. Michigan State takes on Akron at home at 4 p.m. ET on Sept. 10.
