Michigan State will begin its preseason practices without one of its top future cornerstones entering the new season.

Spartans sophomore guard Jaden Akins underwent surgery this past weekend for a stress reaction in his left foot, the school announced Tuesday morning. He’s expected to miss four weeks but will make a full recovery before the start of the regular season.

According to the school, the surgery was conducted by foot and ankle specialist Robert B. Anderson in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

As a freshman, Akins averaged 3.4 points per game in 14.8 minutes. He also was considered one of the Spartans’ top 3-point shooters, making 38% percent of his shots when on the court.

The Spartans are expecting big things from Akins in Year 2. He’s projected to work his way into the starting lineup following the departures of starting wings, Max Christie and Gabe Brown. Last season, Christie averaged 9.3 points per game in 30.8 minutes. Brown averaged 7.1 points per game in 28.9 minutes of action.

Both wings made over 38% of their 3-point shots last season. The Spartans open the regular season against Northern Arizona on Nov. 11.
