It’s been a long time coming for Michigan State linebacker Antjuan Simmons. He finally started his first college football game, but after that one start, he’s already impressed who he calls his biggest critic — his mother.

“That (the season opener) was probably the first time since probably high school that my mom was like ‘Yeah, you played your back end off. I’m proud of you,’” Simmons said after Tuesday’s practice, according to 247Sports. “Because my mom, she’s my hardest critic. It’s hard for me to impress my mom, because she knows everything. She even knows like systematic stuff. She knows when I make a mistake out there and she’ll be like ‘Oh yeah, I saw you do this wrong.’ Or ‘I saw you get knocked down,’ or something. Like ‘What’s up with that?’ It just felt really good making her proud.”

On the second play from scrimmage for Tulsa, Simmons recorded a tackle for a six-yard loss. Simmons recorded six tackles, including 2.5 for loss, one sack, and an interception in the victory Saturday.

Yeah, that’s not a bad day’s work. Simmons will look to build upon that performance this Saturday against Western Michigan.
