Heading into the final week of the season, the speculation surrounding Mark Dantonio’s job in East Lansing has not subsided.
Despite another rough season, the Spartans enter Saturday’s game against Maryland with a shot at bowl eligibility. Though that would be some consolation to an otherwise dismal year, questions continue to persist about Dantonio’s future at Michigan State.
Over the past couple of weeks, Michigan State AD Bill Beekman and Dantonio himself have tried to shoot down rumors. Beekman indicated he had no plans to move on from the head coach while Dantonio said he plans to return as the head coach in 2020.

Despite those comments, the possibility that a change is made in the off-season remains real though increasingly unlikely. In a Tuesday article, Dan Wolken with USA TODAY listed Dantonio’s spot with the Spartans as one that could come open.
Here’s what Wolken had to say:
Michigan State, where Mark Dantonio has said he intends to come back but would be faced with a tough rebuild and an almost certain mandate to shake up his coaching staff. Is it ultimately going to be his call to make?
Dantonio has said the right things throughout a tough season, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be given the chance to right the ship in 2020. With the continued uncertainty, a loss to Maryland could potentially provide the final piece of information needed to make a decision. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
