Michigan State has made the hiring of a local high school football coaching legend official.
On Wednesday afternoon, the school announced that it has added Thomas Wilcher to the Spartan football staff. He will be the director of community and high school relations for the program, per the release.
“I’m excited to announce the hiring of Thomas Wilcher as our Director of Community and High School Relations,” head coach Mel Tucker said in a statement. “I’ve known Coach Wilcher for nearly 20 years. His experience coaching, teaching and mentoring youth throughout his entire career have had a tremendous impact on students in Detroit who have gone on to make a difference in the state and across the country. Our program is looking to have an expanded presence in the community and Thomas is the perfect person to maintain and strengthen strategic partnerships for Michigan State football.”

Wilcher has been incredibly successful during his time at Cass Tech, posted a 190-70 record over 23 seasons. He has led his program to three state titles and one runner-up in over two decades.
A pretty strong list of talented players have played under Wilcher during his lengthy run at Cass Tech. He’s coached players like Jourdan Lewis, Delano Hill, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Michael Onwenu, William Campbell and Joe Barksdale. All have reached the NFL.
Michigan State will open the season on Friday, Sept. 3 on the road against Northwestern.
