Michigan State QB Brian Lewrke didn’t want to settle for late FG: ‘I wanted to win the game’

Brian Lewerke wanted the chance. With enough time on the clock to run at least one play before settling for a field goal, the Michigan State quarterback would’ve liked to take a shot at the end zone to win the game.
Instead, Mark Dantonio trotted the field goal unit on to the field, a decision that appeared to pay off at first glance. But after Matt Coghlin’s 42-yard field goal sailed through the uprights, the play was reviewed and Michigan State had 12 players on the field, negating the kick.
Coghlin’s second try was way off the mark, costing Michigan State the contest in a 10-7 loss to Arizona State.
Lewerke wishes he had that opportunity to win the game for his team. The opportunities were there throughout the game, but he thought he might be able to make something happen with one more attempt.
“I didn’t want to go to overtime,” Lewerke said, according to MLive.com. “I wanted to win the game but that’s all right.”
Lewerke finished the day completing 24-of-38 pass attempts for 291 yards and rushed for 25 more on 10 carries. It wasn’t enough, though, as the Spartans mustered just one touchdown in 60 minutes of football.
The offensive questions are still there in East Lansing, and there are even a few more after an embarrassing home loss.
