Michigan State RB reportedly enters NCAA transfer portal midway through season

For the second time this week, a Michigan State player is jumping into the transfer portal. Michigan State sophomore running back Anthony Williams is transferring from the program, according to Detroit Free Press reporter Rainer Sabin.
Williams has seen limited action this season, with just 12 snaps. It’s been a stark contrast to his freshman season when he played in 12 games and finished third on the team in rushing yards (118).
Williams lost a yard on his lone carry during last week’s 24-0 shutout loss against No. 9 Indiana.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Williams was a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 2 running back in Illinois by ESPN and 247Sports. Williams was also ranked as the No. 1 all-purpose running back in Illinois by Rivals.com.
Michigan State linebacker Marcel Lewis entered the transfer portal on Monday. Michigan State coach Mel Tucker anticipates there could be even more transfers on the horizon.
“There’s a certain type of culture and a certain type of player that we need to have here. That’s really nonnegotiable,” Tucker said. “Everything’s an evaluation. And halfway through the season, at this point, we have a pretty good idea of who can do what. … Nothing is set in stone. I mean, it’s compete and show us what you can do and earn your spot, earn your playing time, earn your right to be able to even stay on the team. Because this is not a recreational-type of situation. This is compete to play, compete to stay.”
Michigan State (1-3) visits Maryland (2-1) on Saturday (11 a.m. CST/BTN).
