Michigan to honor 1997 national championship team during 2022 conference clash

Michigan will honor the 1997 national championship team on Oct. 15 against Penn State, Michigan Athletics announced.
The ceremony will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the championship that happened in 1997. The ceremony will be the first home game in October after the Wolverines go on the road for two games against Iowa and Indiana at the start of October.

It will be a game filled with memories as they honor one of the greatest teams in program history. It was Michigan’s first national championship since 1948. The Wolverines finished the 1997 season with a 12-0 record.
The 1997 regular season was capped off with 20-14 win over Ohio State in Ann Arbor. It was a historic season and the Wolverines were named the national champions after beating Washington State in the Rose Bowl.
Not only did Michigan win the national championship, but defensive back Charles Woodson became the 3rd Michigan player to ever win the Heisman Trophy. Woodson split time as a defensive back and a return specialist for Michigan. He had 7 interceptions in 1997.
That season turned out to be head coach Lloyd Carr’s only national championship. Carr and most of his team will be present in Ann Arbor on Oct. 15. For the 2022 Michigan roster, there will be pressure to beat Penn State on that day and to bring home another national championship at the end of the season.
