Michigan’s starting QB a question mark heading into Week 9 matchup against Iowa

Part of the Big Ten Conference’s “Champions Week,” the Michigan Wolverines (2-4) are scheduled to travel to Iowa City to battle the No. 16 Hawkeyes (6-2) at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.

When it comes to who will start at quarterback in this game, head coach Jim Harbaugh is not saying.

Asked during his Monday virtual press conference, the coach simply responded, “Saturday, we’ll have the opportunity to answer that question.”

Redshirt sophomore Joe Milton started the Wolverines’ first five games, but was replaced by redshirt freshman Cade McNamara, who led a comeback victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in triple-overtime in Piscataway on November 21.

Making his first career start one week later in Ann Arbor against the Penn State Nittany Lions, McNamara suffered a right (throwing) shoulder injury, and his status is still up in the air.

Outside of these two, freshman Dan Villari is the only other scholarship signal-caller on the roster.

Saturday will be the first action for Michigan since the loss to Penn State, as the team was forced to cancel their December 5 home date with the Maryland Terrapins and their December 12 trip to Columbus to face the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes because of positive coronavirus (COVID-19) tests.

The clash with Iowa will air on ESPN.
