Mickey Joseph provided an update on Casey Thompson after the game on Saturday. Nebraska lost QB Casey Thompson to injury in the first half before falling to No. 17 Illinois 26-9.

Thompson was met with a solid Illini pass rush as he was dropping back to pass in the 2nd quarter. Illinois defenders Seth Coleman and Johnny Newton hit Thompson hard, taking him to the ground. After the play, Thompson was seen holding his right arm/elbow as he left the field.

After the game, Joseph confirmed that Thompson’s injury involved his arm/hand, saying that the QB was unable to feel his fingers due to the hit to his elbow. Joseph stated that the QB’s status has been updated to “day-to-day.”

More information will be available next week, according to the coach, presumably after the QB undergoes further testing.

Thompson transferred to Nebraska from Texas and has played in every game for the Huskers this season. Heading into today’s game, Thompson had 1,851 yards passing with 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions on the season. Backup QB Chubba Purdy will be playing in Thompson’s absence.

Thompson’s status will be of particular interest as the team heads into Week 10. With Thompson, Nebraska’s offense had some big plays against the Illini defense. Without their starting QB, the Huskers were mostly stagnant against Illinois.
