Mickey Joseph explains decision to remove Erik Chinander as Nebraska DC

Mickey Joseph is the interim coach at Nebraska but has power to make changes with the team, AD Trev Alberts confirmed that during Joseph’s introductory press conference.
Following Week 3, Joseph exercised that power and made his first big move for his time as the head coach. That came when Joseph fired DC Erik Chinander and elevated Bill Busch into the role to finish the season.
The decision was surprising but understandable. The Huskers had allowed 40+ points in back-to-back games, including a devastating loss to Georgia Southern and a blowout defeat to Oklahoma.
On Tuesday, Joseph explained his decision. He complimented Chinander for being a good coach and good man but said the numbers didn’t add up.
According to Joseph, he did not see the unit getting better under Chinander.
Mickey Joseph on why he fired Erik Chinander: Chins is a good man and a good coach. But the numbers didn’t add up. I didn’t see us getting better.”

One the one hand, it is sometimes odd to see an interim make such a major change. Then again, it looks like Joseph is taking his turn as the head coach seriously and will make the moves he sees as necessary for the program.
We’ll see if the defense can step up moving forward.
