Mike Locksley details next step for Maryland football program after Duke’s Mayo Bowl win

Mike Locksley looked ahead to the future following Maryland’s win over N.C. State in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Friday.

Maryland pulled out the 16-12 win. To honor his win at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Locksley had mayonnaise poured on him as part of the annual tradition of the bowl game. He wore a large hat to absorb the brunt of the mayo.

After the mayo was cleaned off, Locksley took time to address his expectations for Maryland’s program:

“The next step for us is to start competing for Big Ten Championships,” Locksley said.

This win gave Maryland momentum heading into the offseason. Locksley and the Terrapins will be able to use the win as a guide of what postseason success can look like. Maryland posted 2 consecutive bowl game wins in 2021 and 2022.

With wins in the Pinstripe Bowl and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Locksley wanted to use his program’s recent success and build it into something bigger. Maryland will be looking to seriously compete for the B1G Championship on a perennial basis.

Maryland finished the season with an 8-5 record and this was the program’s 1st 8-win season since 2010. In Locksley’s 1st 2 seasons at Maryland, he had a losing record. In the last 2 seasons, Maryland went 15-11 under Locksley.
