Maryland head coach Mike Locksley provided an update on the health status for Dontay Demus heading into the season.
Demus suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2021. The injury took place against Iowa on a kickoff return. He was injured in the 5th game of the season and he was off to a hot start before his season came to an end.
In 5 games, Demus had 507 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns for the Terrapins. After his season was cut short, he will return to the program for one more season in 2022. Locksley spoke about Demus’ status at the B1G Media Day:
“Dontay Demus is ahead of schedule. Really really been impressed with the way he’s returned. Our training staff has done a great job getting Dontay back…he’s got that explosiveness back. We do expect him – barring any setbacks in training camp – to be back for the opening game,” Locksley said.
With Demus returning and getting to catch passes from quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, Maryland could be an offensive threat this season. Getting Demus back will be important for the Terrapins as they will look to get back to a bowl game. In 2021, Maryland had its first winning season since 2014. If Maryland wants to get back to a winning record, Demus will be a factor.
