Milwaukee drafts highest selected position player in Penn State history

Matt Wood just made Penn State history.

The Nittany Lions’ former catcher just became the highest selected position player in program history, being drafted 132nd overall in the 4th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

He was also made Penn State’s highest drafted player since 2008 and is just the 3rd Diamond Lion to be selected within the top 10 rounds in the past 4 drafts.

Wood had quite the 2022 season, becoming just the 2nd Nittany Lion ever to win the B1G batting title. The No. 132 spot in the draft has a $448,200 value according to MLB.com.

“We are so fired up for Matt to realize his dream of playing professional baseball,” Penn State baseball coach Rob Cooper said in a social media statement, via Lions247. “He has worked extremely hard to get this opportunity and now the real work begins. Congratulations, Woody, the Brewers are getting a good one!”

Wood led the team his junior year with a .379 batting average knocking through 75 hits and 53 RBIs. He is the highest drafted player since Drew O’Neil was drafted 120th overall by the Chicago White Sox in 2008.
