New Minnesota head basketball coach Ben Johnson continues to cobble together his 2021-22 roster.
Wednesday afternoon, the Golden Gophers received a verbal commitment from in-state prospect Jackson Purcell. He will join the basketball program as a walk-on player, joining former Johns Hopkins guard Joey Kern.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to play basketball at the University of Minnesota!” Purcell wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to all of my coaches, teammates and my family for everything you have done to make this possible! Go Gophers!”
Per the Star Tribune, Purcell averaged 13 points per game at Eastview in 11 games. The 6-foot-5 incoming freshman was injured, forcing him to miss the remainder of the basketball season.
Minnesota is coming off a 14-15 season in 2020-21 and made a coaching change, replacing Richard Pitino with Ben Johnson.
