Minnesota has best academic semester in program history

Minnesota enjoyed a good season on the field and in the classroom in 2019.

The Gophers closed out the 2018 campaign winning three of their final four games to finish the year 7-6. That included wins over Wisconsin — the first time since 2003 — and a victory over Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl.

It’s easy to see the program is quickly picking up momentum.

But the on-field success is only half of what the Gophers accomplished this season. On Wednesday night, head coach P.J. Fleck took to Twitter to boast about his team’s academic success in the fall semester.

Minnesota’s football team ended the semester with a 3.2 team grade point average, the highest in the history of the program. Fleck couldn’t have been more excited about the news.

“Had the most ELITE academic semester in school history!!” Fleck wrote on Twitter. “Truly excited to share that our Team G.P.A. for the Fall Semester is 3.20, the absolute highest ever for [Minnesota football]!! Our Team Cumulative G.P.A. now stands at a school-record 3.11!! Congrats men!!”

Fleck has often talked about the importance of doing the right things off the field as well as on the field. Clearly he’s recruiting the kind of players that fit his system and accept that challenge.

In two years under Fleck, Minnesota is 12-13 but is quickly becoming a threat to contend in the West. The Gophers have been prominent on the recruiting trail and are building a product for the future in Minneapolis.

The Gophers are on the right track.
