Minnesota kicker Emmit Carpenter was named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

Going into his sophomore season he won the starting kicker job. He made 22-of-24 field goals en route to being named the Big Ten’s Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year (first Gopher to win the award). He was 8-of-8 from 40-49 yards and 2-of-2 from 50-plus (career long was 53 yards vs. Purdue).
Carpenter was awarded a scholarship on January 15, 2017 after his successful season. He started 2017 missing his first two attempts, but then made his next six. Carpenter has made 11-of-15 field goals this year.
The winner of the Burlsworth Trophy will be announced on Dec. 4.
