Mariano Sori-Marin’s night is over early.
The Minnesota linebacker was ejected from Friday night’s rivalry game against Iowa early in the 2nd quarter after being hit with a targeting penalty on Iowa running back Tyler Goodson. Sori-Marin is arguably the best linebacker the Gophers have this season.
Sori-Marin made a hit on Goodson while leading with the helmet. The Minnesota linebacker appeared to be going for the legs, but Goodson was being brought to the ground and his body level changed, which led to the helmet-to-helmet contact.
In the first 3 games of the season, Sori-Marin racked up 17 tackles and 3 pass break-ups. Minnesota was already shorthanded defensively in the game, with starting defensive back Benjamin St-Juste out for the contest.
Minnesota is looking for its first victory over Iowa since 2014. It’s going to be very tough without two of the better defenders on the field for the 2nd half.
