Minnesota recruit reportedly asks for release from letter of intent

Dennis Evans III, a 5-star center who signed with Minnesota 4 months ago, has reportedly had a change of heart.
The Gophers men’s basketball program’s highest-ranked recruit in 20 years likely isn’t coming to Minnesota after all, the Star Tribune reported, as the 7-foot senior from California told the Gophers earlier this week he wanted to be released from his signed letter of intent. The program is expected to grant the release, according to the report.
This is the latest blow to a program that has had a difficult season. The Gophers (7-19 and 1-14 in the Big Ten), play Saturday at Nebraska, but are on an 11-game losing streak after Wednesday’s 88-70 loss at Maryland.
The Class of 2023 prospect at the time of his ranked as the No. 27 player in the nation per 247Sports. He’s a consensus top 50 prospect and chose the Golden Gophers over TCU, UC Riverside and Texas, among others.
This development leaves Minnesota with one recruit in this class, a 4-star shooting guard Cameron Christie, who committed in July.
