Minnesota WR announces decision to step away from football program

Minnesota’s wide receiver room has taken a hit.
Receiver Demetrius Douglas announced in a social media post on Monday that he is stepping away from the program after spending the last three seasons with the Gophers. He has appeared in each of Minnesota’s 26 contests over the past two years.
“The events of 2020 have given us all an opportunity to reflect and reground on our purpose and priorities. With my graduation planned for this December after 3 1/2 years on campus and the announced cancellation of the fall season, I prayed deeply on the right next step for me and decided that I would begin the transition to the next phase of my life’s journey,” Douglas wrote.
“While the circumstances and plans for the Big Ten season have recently changed, my priorities and plan for the future have not.”
Douglas also wished his teammates and coaches the best of luck this season, while also thanking everyone for his time with the Gophers.
In his career at Minnesota, Douglas totaled 34 catches for 327 yards and a touchdown. In addition to being a receiver, he was also a punt returner for the Gophers, and took one punt to the end zone during the 2018 campaign.
Last fall, Douglas had his most productive season in terms of receiving for the Gophers. He finished the year with 157 yards on 15 catches. His best year as a return man came in 2018, fielding 24 kickoffs for 594 yards and another 7 punts for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Minnesota is scheduled to open the 2020 season against Michigan.
