Minnesota’s backcourt has taken another massive hit.

Earlier this week, freshman guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. On Friday, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported that star guard and the team’s leading scorer and assist man, Marcus Carr, is also exploring opportunities outside of Minneapolis.

Carr had an outstanding season for the Golden Gophers, averaging 19.4 points, 4.9 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He scored 20 points or more in 12 games during the 2020-21 season and hit double figures in all but 3 of Minnesota’s 29 games.

The news of Carr’s entry into the transfer portal comes days after Minnesota announced the firing of head coach Richard Pitino after eight seasons in the Twin Cities. Pitino was out of work for approximately 12 hours, becoming the next head coach at New Mexico.

After four seasons in Minnesota, Carr is a candidate to declare for the 2021 NBA Draft and test the waters. If he receives a good evaluation, he may not return to college at all.

However, if it’s recommended that he play one more season at the college level, he will explore options outside of Minnesota to close out his career. Carr would be an excellent addition to just about any roster in the sport.

In addition to Carr and Mashburn, Jarvis Omersa also entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal this week.
