The AAC originally coined the term “Power 6” to describe itself. Now, another Group of Five conference is adding another phrase to the lexicon.
The Mountain West recently released a statement on Oct. 1, claiming to be the nation’s “top non-autonomy 5 conference”, according to Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel:
The “aggressively pursue strategic initiatives” hints at exploring expanding. Could there be a race between the MWC and AAC for a school like North Texas or Rice? Could Gonzaga or Wichita be in play for hoops? Get past the buzz words and these become very interesting times. pic.twitter.com/KeASwlqVvI

All the potential realignment scenarios will be fascinating to follow, as the landscape continues to evolve.
Air Force, Colorado State, Boise State, and San Diego State are all electing to remain in the Mountain West instead of joining the AAC after a heavy courtship, per reports. AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco remains adamant no official invitations were extended, but it is interesting to see the Mountain West’s statement following the Friday morning report.
After Texas and Oklahoma’s decision to head to the SEC, the Big 12 responded by collecting BYU and AAC schools UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston.
