MSU OL coach Chris Kapilovic cites ‘common sense’ advantages of illegally stealing signs

MSU OL coach Chris Kapilovic has heard some of the reactions to Michigan’s sign-stealing allegations, including those that believe it’s not a major advantage to know the signs of an opponent. Needless to say, Kapilovic disagrees with that assessment.
Speaking at a Tuesday press conference, Kapilovic said he would “check” any football coach that claims having the signs of an opponent is not an advantage:
“I’ll be honest: anybody that’s coaching football that says if the other team knows what you’re doing is not an advantage, I gotta check them,” said Kapilovic. “That’s not true.”
The offensive line coach went on to say having signs is clearly a big deal. Otherwise, teams would not go to great lengths to try and hide or disguise their signs.
“Everybody’s listening, you know what the other team’s saying. Because why is everybody doing that? Because it’s an advantage. Even for an offense, if you even know the coverage, if you know what blitz is coming, you should have a plan of how to react to that and you can put them in a vulnerable situation,” Kapilovic explained. “It works both ways.
“Everybody wouldn’t be trying to hide signals if it wasn’t a big deal that the other team knew what you were doing. Let’s just put it that way. That’s pretty common sense.”
Robert Griffin III was the latest analyst to downplay the entire investigation and the idea of Michigan knowing the signs of opponents. Griffin said every team he played against “knew our signals” and went on to claim this entire saga did not give the Wolverines an unfair advantage.
