NCAA Board of Directors releasing updated guidance to interim NIL policy

The NCAA Board of Directors are releasing updated guidance on ways schools can be involved in NIL activities in college sports.

This release happened after the NCAA Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the updated guidance. The NCAA currently has an interim NIL policy and the board of directors gave new guidance to the schools on how they can help athletes navigate NIL deals.

The updated guidance for the interim NIL policies focus on education, collectives, and following NCAA rules. The NCAA and schools will continue to monitor NIL activities and deals to ensure that no violations are taking place. The NCAA will pursue cases of NIL violations that directly go against the interim policy that is in place.

The board released a statement on the updated guidance to the interim policy:

“The NIL landscape is constantly evolving, and the Board of Directors decided it was important to offer further guidance with respect to a number of key questions that have arisen recently,” said Jere Morehead, chair of the board and president of the University of Georgia. “As we continue to reinforce current NCAA rules, we expect to offer further guidance in the future on what should and should not be done when engaged in these activities. We are committed to fostering a fair and appropriate NIL environment that supports our students and complies with our rules.”

Third-party administrators will still be allowed to participate in NIL activities with student-athletes. The NCAA will continue to monitor the relationship between third-party organizations and the schools.
