The NCAA has officially adopted new transfer legislation that will be more student-athlete-friendly moving forward. The organization released a statement on the new policy on Thursday.

Per the release from the NCAA, all Division I student-athletes will be permitted a one-time transfer opportunity with immediate eligibility at their next institution. It will take place beginning in the 2021-22 academic year, assuming it is approved by the Division I Board of Directors.

The next time the Board of Directors will meet with April 28.

The new one-time transfer legislation will cover student-athletes in all sports. Previously, players competing in baseball, football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey have been forced to sit out one year after transferring before earning eligibility.

Discussions regarding the one-time transfer rule have been happening for some time now, but decisions have been delayed because of issues with the COVID-19 pandemic.
