Despite the mounting rumors that Mike Riley is on his way out of Lincoln, new athletic director Bill Moos says no decision has been made about the future of the Nebraska head coach.
During an interview with “The Bottom Line,” Moos said that he’s focused on giving his full support to Riley and the football program for the final three weeks of the season. Right now, he’s not interested in creating any extra distractions for the Huskers.
“I’m supporting Mike and his coaches to keep our focus where it needs to be,” Moos said. “And that is to finish strong and hopefully get into a bowl game.”
Nebraska currently sits at 4-5 on the season and is coming off an overtime loss to Northwestern. Bowl eligibility seems like a longshot for the Cornhuskers, especially with Penn State and Iowa still remaining on the schedule.
Moos went on to assess the state of the program and said he’d like to see the team be able to close out a few more of these close games.
“Sometimes very good,” Moos said. “Probably not tremendously consistent, and that’s what any coach is looking for. I’ve been impressed with the defense at times. We’ve got some very good players offensively. You look for consistency, and putting that last nail in the coffin is always important, too, and I know that was a real frustration for our players and coaches and fans.”
When Moos took over at Nebraska, he said he wasn’t interested in firing a coach mid-season, so it’s no surprise he hasn’t made a decision on Riley’s future yet, or at least made it public.
But with each loss, the pressure mounts to get rid of Riley and bring someone else in — the favorite is former Husker and current UCF head coach Scott Frost — to lead the program.
