Nebraska freshman RB likely out until spring

Freshman running back Ronald Thompkins likely wasn’t expected to see much of the field in 2019. With a couple of talented ball carriers in the backfield and recovering from a knee injury, there’s been some patience with the three-star running back.
Now, though, Nebraska won’t have much of a chance to get Thompkins on the field at all in 2019. On Thursday, head coach Scott Frost told the media that Thompkins will undergo another minor knee surgery and probably won’t return until spring. The news was reported my Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald.
Thompkins suffered two ACL tears in high school.
Nebraska’s staff was planning to be cautious with Thompkins, not planning to rush him onto the field too early. That was a smart move with Maurice Washington, Dedrick Mills and Wan’Dale Robinson as options at the position. But now it sounds like the first glimpse of Thompkins will have to wait until at least 2020.
As a high school prospect, Thompkins was ranked as the No. 5 all-purpose back in the 2019 class and was a top 50 player out of Georgia. He was listed as one of the 500 best players overall.
