There’s a new running backs coach in Lincoln. Former TCU assistant Bryan Applewhite is officially on staff at Nebraska. Scott Frost made the hire Thursday and the school announced the addition via social media.

Applewhite spent the last two seasons at TCU where he coached running backs. Prior to joining Gary Patterson’s Horned Frogs’ staff, he spent five years at Colorado State. In his coaching career, Applewhite has worked at Louisiana-Monroe, Montana State, Wyoming and Northern Colorado.

Applewhite was a member of two national championship teams as a player at Northern Colorado.

Nebraska is looking to improve its running game for the 2022 season. While the Huskers ranked fifth in the B1G on the ground, averaging 180.2 yards per contest, a lot of that was dependent on the mobility of quarterback Adrian Martinez.

The Huskers won’t have that same advantage in 2022, as Martinez hit the transfer portal and moved to Kansas State for his final year of eligibility. Martinez ended the year as the team’s leading rusher, followed by Rahmir Johnson, Jaquez Yant and Markese Stepp.

Nebraska concluded the 2021 season with a 3-9 record.
