Nebraska RB coach Bryan Applewhite discusses Huskers’ search for ‘RB1’ in fall camp

Nebraska running back coach Bryan Applewhite was excited when talking about who will be his starting running back this upcoming season. Though he doesn’t have a starter nailed down at this point, Applewhite sees a lot of options available.
“The competition’s been unbelievable,” said Applewhite according to video shared by Husker247. “It’s like you get the last 7 triple crown winners but start them all in the same race.
“They’ve been holding each other accountable and competing against each other at the same time. It’s been really good.”
When asked by reporters if the Cornhuskers have found their starting running back yet, Applewhite said:
“Once RB1 emerges himself, I think Nebraska’s gonna have a real good running back.”
Applewhite continued.
“Who shows me who wants it every day, who wants to be the most consistent every day…I don’t want an easy decision.”
One of those running backs that may emerge is transfer Anthony Grant, who is a junior college transfer from New Mexico Military Institute.
Grant, who rushed for over 2500 yards while at NMMI, has already impressed special teams coach Bill Busch with his abilities running back kicks, and should be in the running to be starting running back for the Cornhuskers.
Redshirt sophomore Rahmir Johnson is another name to look for as a potential starter for the Cornhuskers this season. Johnson has impressed Busch with his demeanor and work early in fall camp.
Both could make a huge contribution to the Cornhuskers’ offense this year.
